From Brickworks to Blockbusters: Universal Studios Puts Bedford on the Map

Universal Studios is coming to Bedford. Photographer Rob Johns explores the game-changing development and what it means for storytelling, tourism, and the town’s creative future.

Something truly magical is happening in Bedford. No, not another Costa or Starbucks opening. This is truly spectacular. The stuff of dreams—like winning the lottery! Think 476 acres of world-class entertainment, the sort you’d expect in far-flung places like Orlando, Osaka, or Hollywood. That’s right: Universal Studios is coming to Bedford.

After months of rumour and nail-biting anticipation, the announcement is now official. The UK government, Bedford Borough Council, and Universal Destinations & Experiences (a branch of Comcast NBCUniversal) have confirmed that Bedford is the chosen site for Universal's first-ever European theme park and resort, set to open in 2031.

Why Bedford?

Bedford has often been described as a hidden gem. It’s been featured more than once as one of the best places to live in the East of England by The Sunday Times. As a Bedford-based photographer and filmmaker—born and brought up in the town—I care passionately about the place.

It’s a beautiful place to live, with a rich and diverse population, a thriving music scene, and it’s home to global brands like Fujifilm. It hosts one of the biggest street festivals in the country—the Bedford River Festival, a biennial event drawing upwards of 250,000 visitors.

Bedford also makes perfect sense for Universal. The site near Kempston Hardwick, a former brickworks, is ideally placed—just 40 minutes from London by express train (even faster non-stop to St Pancras International), close to Luton Airport, recently given the go-ahead for expansion, and set within the Oxford-Cambridge innovation corridor with East-West Rail improvements on the horizon.

This is a deeply researched, fully backed regeneration project with the muscle of one of the world’s biggest entertainment companies behind it. Bedford is now front and centre—and firmly on the world stage.

What Can We Expect?

Details are still under wraps, but let’s indulge in a little informed speculation. Rides themed around Jurassic Park, Shrek, Fast & Furious, Harry Potter, or Super Mario? Quite possibly. Kung Fu Panda’s "Land of Awesomeness"? Yes, that’s a real thing in Beijing.

While the UK version will have its own identity, Universal has said it’s keen to celebrate Bedford’s unique local history too.

But this isn’t just about thrill rides and butterbeer. The wider resort will include retail, dining, live entertainment, and the potential to redefine what tourism looks like in the East of England.

The Numbers Are huge

  • £50 billion projected contribution to the UK economy over the next 30 years.

  • 8.5 million visitors expected in the first year alone.

  • 28,000 jobs created—including 8,000 operational roles and up to 20,000 in construction.

  • Around 80% of those jobs will go to people in Bedford and the surrounding region.

That’s not just a theme park—it’s a catalyst. Infrastructure, education partnerships, tourism, and housing will all feel the ripple effects. There’s already talk of investment in roads, rail, and even new college programmes linked to hospitality and entertainment careers.

What Does It Mean for Bedford?

It means change. Real change. I’ve lived and worked here for years, and I’ve heard every version of “there’s nothing to do in Bedford.” This changes the narrative. Suddenly, the town becomes a destination. A hub. A magnet for creativity, innovation, and investment. A place recognised on the world map.

And while we should remain grounded—this project still needs to navigate the planning process—there’s no denying the momentum. Local voices have been heard. The community is engaged. The government has pledged to fast-track the infrastructure needed to make this happen.

A Photographer's Take

As a Bedford-based photographer and filmmaker serving clients everywhere, I’m fascinated by stories of transformation. I help brands tell their stories visually—capturing the moments that matter, whether it’s a promo film, a business portrait, or a story-driven campaign.

This story? It’s a blockbuster.

And just as Universal will soon be capturing the imaginations of millions here, I’ll continue working with brands and charities near and far—helping them connect, engage, and grow through strategy-based visual storytelling.

The Final Frame

Universal Studios coming to Bedford is more than just a headline. It’s a sign of what’s possible when a town dares to dream a little bigger. From brickworks to blockbusters, we’re entering a new era.

Welcome to Bedford. Lights, camera… and a lot of action!
